Had I discovered this project sooner, it is probably something I would have definitely tried to take part in. The innovative idea that lies behind the SKIN project was to publish a living and breathing story solely in tattoos on the bodies of 2095 individuals.
Through this project, creator Shelley Jackson aimed to raise awareness of how important and meaningful one individual can be by assigning each person who volunteered to take part in her project a single word from her story to have tattooed on themselves. The desired end result was to have her full work published one word at a time on over 2,000 different people, and if one of those people were to take their own lives, her work would remain incomplete.
On the SKIN website, you can find more intriguing information about this creative endeavor. It looks like the site hasn’t been updated since 2010, and to my knowledge Shelley’s work was never completely finished, but I am holding out hope that one day Shelley’s beautiful story will be published in its entirety.
